National Women's Health Week

We all look forward to this time of year. May brings us flowers, warmth and a welcomed change from the winter (at least to those of us in the Northern Hemisphere!). Along with Spring, this May also brings the 9th annual National Women’s Health Week, May 11th - May 17th. Coordinated and sponsored by the Offices for Women’s Health at the US Department of Health and Human Services, the goal of this week is to promote and inspire women to make small changes in their individual lives that will put them or keep them on the path towards health and wellness. The week kicks off with National Women’s Check-Up Day on May 12th, which is an effort to encourage women to visit health care professionals for a check-up. The OWH (Offices for Women’s Health) want to stress the importance of regular check-ups as vital to the early detection of a myriad of health issues women face today.

Another inspiring part of Women’s Health Week is the 5th annual WOMAN Challenge (Women and girls Out Moving Across the Nation) coordinated by the same folks at the Offices for Women’s Health. This eight-week challenge encourages women and girls to walk 10,000 steps or get 30 minutes of exercise daily. There are already 8,745 individuals and 536 teams participating.

You can visit www.womenshealth.gov to learn more about Women’s Health Week, pledge for National Check-Up Day, and to sign up for the WOMAN challenge.

3-Packs of Mismatched Color Day Pads - 25% OFF!!

When I was a kid, my grandmother told me not to mix busy with busy, stripes with polka dots, floral with neon and so on. Though I do trust my Gram's inherent sense of fashion (she’s a pretty hip lady), she was talking about skirts and shirts rather than holders and inserts by GladRags. This May we have a special of 25% off 3-packs of mismatched Color Cotton Day Pads. These are all first quality items and for those of you who welcome a surprise pairing of holders and inserts, this special is for you!

Order the mismatched pads at this special price while supplies last.

Image Monthly Friend - Tess

Name: Tess McDaniel

Hometown: Boulder, Colorado, but now hails from Flagstaff, Arizona

Age: 24

Profession: Professional Student, River Guide

Interests: Geology, Canyoneering, Rafting

Dreams: To restore the river systems of the West. To get paid enough to live from just rafting alone. Another daydream of hers is to not even have a house, but to live in various tents and caves around the Southwest.

Number of years/months using menstrual alternatives: About a year, maybe more.

Reason for switching to alternatives:
Tess switched immediately to alternatives upon learning about the various options available to her, especially menstrual cups. She was initially very excited to incorporate them into her routine on a personal level, as she has always hated dealing with tampons and pads. Also, in her line of work saving money and creating less waste are both very important. She was finding herself struggling with her monthly visit while in the wilderness. When rafting/backpacking, one is obliged to pack out all waste created. Packing out your toilet paper and food waste is enough of a burden, why make more waste using disposable pads and tampons?

Favorite thing about alternatives:
The lack of waste! Tess says is her favorite thing about and main reason for using alternatives. You buy the product once, and you have it for years of use.

Favorite menstruating on the river story:
On a trip in the Labyrinth Canyon in Utah, Tess needed to remove her cup. There was someone using the groover*, so she went into the bushes. Just as she had got into position and was about to pull her cup out, legions of bugs swarmed and attacked her. She ran around a little to lose the pesky insects and crouched again to finish her task, but they kept coming back. After a few more rounds of crouching, swatting, hopping and running around with her pants around her legs, she finally finished the task at hand. This was one riverdance we would have like to have seen!
* A ammo-box that serves as a latrine for the duration of a trip, set up in each campsite along a rivertrip. Named after the grooves imprinted in the backs of your thighs before toilet seats were packed in for comfort.
